As part of my Scholastic KL Book Tour on April 25-26, I spoke at Sri KL International School. At the end of my talk, as was my norm, I challenged the children, “Write a better story than mine. If it’s good, I’ll put it on my blog!”
Well, Xin Ru has taken me up on my word and sent me her tale. So here it is. Presenting…
THE TWO HEROES
by Chuah Xin Ru (more…)
So grateful to Scholastic for making my wish come true! I wanted to present my books A Fighting Chance and Not in the Stars in Malaysian schools, so on April 25-26, Scholastic arranged for me to speak in three schools – Tenby International School, Idrissi International School and Sri KL International School.
I had a wonderful time. Some of the audiences were small and intimate, but in Sri KL International for example, the students were from Form 1 all the way to Form 6. All the children were very literate and well-spoken. They were very imaginative and creative.
Just some humourous ideas from the children themselves – The weapon of choice for Mr Bomber (the villain) is… a pencil. Yup, we had to crack our brains about how Mr Bomber was going to take over the world using… a pencil. Well, it is said that “the pen is mightier than the sword”! 🙂
Another highly-visual plot – our hero jumps from the 800m Burj Khalifa onto a moving plane, and battles to send the villain back into a magic portal which is behind a secret door approximately found on the 100th floor of the 211-storey building.
Their imaginations were still buzzing when I left. After I returned home, one of the students emailed me her story, which I will share in a later post!
I’m thankful for the full turnout at the Playtime with Ye Ye storytelling at Imagine Native-Creative Fest for Kids at S.E.A. Aquarium on 5 June. There were more than 50 children in the room! We didn’t have enough paper, pencils and colour pencils! (more…)
Updated my slides for Author Talk at Imagine|Native! at S.E.A. Aquarium on June 5.
I am grateful to God for His blessings and thankful for the support of the reading and publishing community for these acknowledgements.
Please join my illustrator Haw Shing Yee and me at S.E.A. Aquarium on June 5, from 1:15 to 2:45 pm!
Not in the Stars made it to Hedwig Anuar Award 2015 shortlist. What an honour!
